Department of Fertilization and Soil Matter Dynamics

Research Activities

  • Basic research on crop nutrient acquisition incl. Rhizosphere
  • Environmentally sound, demand oriented and sustainable fertilization strategies in conventional and organic farming systems
  • Fertilization of renewable raw materials and energy plants
  • Impact and mitigation of the global change with respect to fertilization and soil matter dynamics
  • Nitrogen and Phsophorus

Methods

  • Field and pot trials
  • Field and lab analysis
  • Investigation of rhizosphere processes
  • Modern spectrocopic analytical techniques
  • Usage of radioactive and stable isotopes
  • Measurement of trace gases
  • Computer modelling of nutrients and humus turnover processes in the soil-plant system

Within projects of practical relevance, cooperation with farmers, extension services, and companies is essential. Research and teaching are covering temperate and tropical/subtropical climatic conditions.

Teaching

Teaching activities cover fertilization and soil matter dynamics in the agricultural bachelor- and master courses, both in German and English language.

At the undergraduate level (Bachelor), main focus is on practical fertilization and soil fertility management including necessary basics. One aim is the direct vocational qualification, another aim is the preparation for a successful scientific master study. The latter includes an early contact with scientific issues.

At the graduate level (Master) fertilization and soil matter dynamics are further deepened at an ambitious scientific level and relevant subjects are explored from a researchers point of view. The skills imparted qualify students equally for a demanding professional activity outside the university as well as for their own scientific research work within the framework of a doctorate.

Teaching equally consists of dialogue lectures, exercises, excursions, seminars and scientific literature reading courses.
